First Female Post Season NFL Referee Works Chargers Patriots Playoff Game

January 11, 2019

Sarah Thomas grew up loving sports, playing high school softball, then playing basketball at the University of Mobile. She continued playing basketball on a men's team in a Mississippi church league.

She also began officiating basketball games, then one day her brother invited her to go with him to a football officials meeting. The rest is history..

Sarah blazed the trail for women referees in football. She was the first woman to officiate a major college football game, the first to officiate a bowl game, and the first to officiate in a Big Ten stadium. In April of 2015, Thomas was hired as the first full-time female official in NFL history,

This weekend, she becomes the first female NFL referee to officiate a post season NFL football game, when the Chargers take the field Sunday against the New England Patriots.
