Holiday of Miracles Patient Story: Ryan

December 12, 2017
Written by mom Whenever I am asked to talk about my son Ryan and the journey he has been on for the last 9 months... I find myself having a hard time starting. It's not because I don't know where to start but having to go back and relive the worse moment in my life... how we almost lost our son, twice! September 6, 2015 will always be branded in my soul as being a date I will never forget. Watching your son become so sick the days leading up to that day and having several doctors keep telling you... it's just a virus. To find yourself in the middle of your worst nightmare as a team of 15 trauma doctors/nurses work fast and furious to literally... save my son! He was in Toxic Shock and his body had become septic and his organs were shutting down... His body was on the brink of giving up. I was in a state of shock and was praying that his father, Bill, would get to Rady Childrens Hospital as fast as he could. He had been up in Santa Barbara at a horse show and was frantically driving down to San Diego. I was blessed to have my husband Jeff right by my side and he was calling and giving Bill updates. Even though I was being supported by my loving husband... I couldn't get through this without my son's amazing father, fear had set in. Once Ryan was stabilized he was moved to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for the next several days and it became apparent that Ryan wasn't going to let his body give up. This was the beginning of the biggest fight for not only our son, but all of us could ever be up against. It Holiday of Miracles takes place December 13th & 14th.
