Ever since we moved to North County four years ago, I’ve seen friends posting pictures of their hike through the Mushroom Caves, and it’s been on the list of family adventures.
We finally made it happen this weekend.
I wanted to share it with you because it’s such a great little hike and easy to do with kids – Ours are 7 and 4 and they had no problem navigating the hike.
It’s officially known as Annie’s Canyon Trail but everyone I know calls them the Mushroom Caves (not sure why?) It starts with an easy walk around San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach.
Then you reach the caves and, ultimately, the narrow part of the loop, which leads you to the top of the trail. The payoff is an awesome view of the Lagoon and beach behind it!
Smaller dogs that can fit through the narrow part of the caves can join too, we were surprised how well Olive the Pug did!
*Parent tip: don’t forget to take enough water. Even though it’s a relatively easy hike, we underestimated how thirsty we’d all be, and had to ration a bottle between the four humans and the dog. #FAIL.
And keep your eyes peeled for surprise art carved into the walls from hikers before you. This smile made us SMILE!
