To have and to hold from this day forward…

We’ve all heard those words in marriage vows, but they take on a new meaning with the Wife Carrying Contest!

This annual tradition originated in Finland, but the competition has spread to other countries, including the United States.

The 2017 North American Wife Carrying Competition was held this past weekend in Newry, Maine. Jake and Kirsten Barney, from Lexington, Virginia took 1st place.

Here’s how it works-

The husband must carrying his wife through an obstacle course, including sand traps, the “widow-maker” water hazard, and log jumping. There are several wife-carrying strategies/techniques. There’s Piggyback, Fireman’s Carry, or Estonian-style, where the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband’s shoulders.

In the interest of equal-rights, they now allow the wife to carry the husband if they wish, and the couples don’t necessarily have to be married.

The winning pair takes home 5 times the wife’s weight in cash – and beer.  This year’s winners took home $630, 12 cases of beer and an entry into the Wife Carrying World Championship next summer in Finland.
