By Evonne Ermey,

Shannen Doherty has been fearless in the documentation of her cancer journey. Diagnosed with breast cancer last year, she has thrown the door wide open on her most intimate moments – Shaving her head, receiving chemo, receiving support from family and friends — and with each image, no matter how stark, painful or bittersweet, she shares a message of hope.

“#fbf to a very short bit ago. Day after #chemoday isn’t always so great. Sometimes one isn’t able to ┬ádance, or eat or even to think about the next day. Sometimes it just feels like you aren’t going to make it. That passes. Sometimes the next day or 2 days later or 6 but it passes and movement is possible. Hope is possible. Possibility is possible. To my cancer family and everyone suffering… stay courageous. Stay strong. Stay positive. #wegotthis #fightlikeagirl,” Doherty captioned a recent post.

A stark image, followed by a level message of hope and inspiration.

She gives advice to her teammates, all those out there thrashing against the same opponent – cancer. And it does feel like she is a team captain, the way she talks so directly to her followers, letting them know that they’re not alone and giving solid coping advice peppered with positive affirmations.

“I don’t enjoy chemo day or needle like things in my chest or my port but, at least with this crew it’s not so bad. Make sure you connect not only with your oncologist but also with the person administering your chemo. Thank you to the Los Angeles Clinic.”

It is not uncommon for celebrities to use their status to shine a light on issues near to them. Doherty’s light (not to get too flowery) is like a giant lighthouse in a rough and choppy sea. She’s literally calling to her people, ‘look at me. I’m doing this with you. You’re not alone,’ and that’s why Doherty is a beast, and a bad ass, and a total inspiration. We don’t care if Brenda wasn’t your most favorite classmate at Beverly Hills High, we are in total awe of her.

Today, and especially this October, which is Breast Cancer awareness month, we thank and appreciate you, Shannen Doherty. Thanks for being so inspiring. #Yougotthis
