Hey San Diego, are you feeling lucky?

A new promotion put out by Ally Financial has San Diegans searching for spare change, pennies to be specific.

The company has scattered ten faux pennies in designated locations throughout the city, each redeemable for a prize of $1,000. Treasure hunters gather clues from the Ally website to determine where their lucky pennies might be hiding.

The latest clue? “San Diego knows Vaudville is dead. Prohibition too. But at this venue, both were once very much alive.”

The “lucky pennies” are larger than regular pennies and are stamped with the Ally logo on one side and “100,000” on the other.

“We hope that people will have fun searching for Ally Lucky Pennies in their cities and that the campaign will inspire people to look at money in a different way,” said Andrea Riley, chief marketing officer for Ally, to ABC 10 News.

The genius marketing scheme covers nine cities – San Diego, Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Chicago, Detroit, NYC, DC, Charlotte and Miami – and will give away a total of $10,000 in each area.
