Jewel has released a new song to raise awareness of the importance and benefits of public housing. Jewel knows firsthand what it’s like to be homeless.

She spent her younger days living with her father in Alaska in a house without indoor plumbing. She and her dad would sometimes earn a living singing in bars and taverns. Later, she traveled the U.S living in her car, doing street performances and singing in coffee houses. It was at coffee house in Poway where she met up with singer-songwriter Steve Poltz, who wrote her hit song “You Were Meant For Me”.

Jewel’s new song, “Home To Me” is a collaboration with the public awareness initiative, ReThink, to encourage Americans to rethink their perceptions of public housing. “Home to Me” is available as a free download at

According to Jewel, “I’m so honored to share ‘Home to Me’ and my hope is that the song causes people to stop and rethink the importance of home. Millions of families, veterans, disabled and elderly citizens rely on public housing and I hope that through this new song people consider the positive impact of public housing.”
