Little Tommy Blog: Sunday Tribute For Amber Dubois

I never met Amber Dubois, but I feel that I know her. Sunday, will be 2 years to the day Amber walked to school with a 200 dollar check in her pocket to buy a lamb. She never made it to school.
This weekend her mom Carrie honors her beautiful daughter by introducing San Diego to Team Amber. Team Amber is a search and rescue team of 22 people here in town that are now certified.
I have the honor of hosting this event.
I’m nervous about having to emcee this special tribute on Sunday for Amber. Hosting an event is something that I would rather NOT do, BUT when it comes to Amber and Chelsea, I will do anything even if it’s out of my comfort zone.
One year ago today, both Amber and Chelsea were both in our hearts. This community was hurting so much and we were all wanting to do something about it.
It is normal for people to fade from that passion we all had. It is normal to forget, BUT not for Amber and Chelsea. Please don’t forget them.

Sunday, at Infusion Church on West Felicita in Escondido, Amber’s mom is presenting the 22 people that make up the Search and Rescue team. It’s also a dinner and fundraiser. There’s going to be a great silent auction with many items like diamond rings to guitars signed by Blink 182.
Carrie’s passion is to change all that she went through those first several months and all the mistakes that she had to see right before her eyes and make it right.
She put together a group of people that will search and FIND anyone missing regardless if they are classified as a runaway or not.
There are so many police policies that are messed up that Carrie had to go through, but now she is trying her hardest to make those policies better for any family in the future to get the right help immediately and implement everything that needs to be in place to find their child.
Carrie is an inspiration. When I first met her, I just wanted to hug her and help her and do all that I can to make her smile. Today, after knowing her for about a year now, I still want to hug her and make her smile, but I also know she’s frickin crazy (in a good way). Carrie doesn’t take “sh–” from anyone.
I think I’m hosting this event on Sunday, because I just didn’t want to piss her off.

We celebrate the lives of Chelsea and Amber now. We honor them now. We take what they both had in their hearts and learn from them.
Amber loved animals. I wish Jerry knew Amber.
Take a moment and just think about Carrie. Think about what she had to deal with and what she thinks about and goes through every day of her life. Think about how she has to keep busy to keep her mind off of certain things.
Then realize what she just did. She lead 22 people to get certified so they all can immediately help families. So, they won’t have to deal with what she and so many others had to before.
She’s frickin AMAZING!
Infusion Church in Escondido Sunday February 13th from 3pm to 7pm.

I am so grateful for Carrie’s work. It’s a weird “relief” to know if something happens to one of my children here in Escondido that her efforts and her tragedy will be there to help me and my babies. I will support her in anyway I can and want to thank her from the place in my heart that only a parent can understand is there.

Tommy, you are going to be a great MC because you care. My daughter, Carrie, would not have asked you if that were not true. We hope the silent auction will provide funding for training of “Amber” the labrador donated to TEAM AMBER RESCUE and provide for transportation costs for searches to help others. I will be there and pray that others who truly care will as well. FYI: The picture of Amber above is special to me because she almost never wore pink. She is giving me that …oh, Grandmom, not another picture…look. She is wearing the necklace we bought on our trip to Yosemite. She was only 4 and told me it wasn’t a real vacation unless we went on an airplane, so, that’s what we did. She wanted to see wolves and, of course, there were none. That’s when she learned how so many wolves were killed and started reading about them. We joined the support at Yellowstone for the wolf project and followed it’s progress with great hope. While we took many trips, Amber most wanted to be in a weeklong study group at Yellowstone with me when she was old enough to enroll. Finally, she was. We were scheduled to spend a week at Yellowstone studying the wolves in June, 2009, just 4 months after her precious life was was taken from us. I know Amber is watching and is very proud of these 22 SAR volunteers which includes Carrie, and the fact that they have chosen the wolf as their logo. Amber loved the dedication of the wolf to family…everyone who comes on Feb. 13th will be part of the wolf pack, if just for one special day. Sending a big hug to you dear friend. Sheila
